DESCRIPTION:
The design of this small art gallery was shaped by the constraints it was given: an unusual pentagonal floor plan, a circular structural column at its center, and a very limited budget.
Despite these constraints, the client insisted on maximizing the available wall space for displaying artwork while accommodating a private office/reception area and a small storage room.
Our solution was to divide the space into two exhibition zones, using the central column as a "fulcrum" where two partition walls converge to form a sharp triangular point in the middle of the floor plan, while simultaneously increasing the available wall space for displaying art.
Running parallel to the existing walls they face, these new partitions enclose a space that serves as the private office and reception area.
The partitions were kept at a consistent height of 2.15 meters, below the existing ceiling beams, allowing the enclosed office/reception area to read as an independent sculptural volume within the gallery.
The textured black floor was the result of clear epoxy resin reacting with residual adhesive left on the exposed cement floor from the previous interior fit-out.
A serendipitous outcome born from the very budgetary constraints that shaped the design of this project.
